Up to how many points?

First to that many points wins the match — a game counts one point, a gammon two.

With a clock?

Against the computer there is no clock.

Rules

Turkish house rules: no doubling cube, a mars counts 2 (no triple), no hit-and-run in your own home board. Tapa applies to Plakoto only and drops the mana rule.

02 The five games

Five games, one board

The same wood, the same thirty checkers, the same two dice — and five games with as little in common as whist and bridge. Each has its place, its word, and its one rule that turns everything around.

Backgammon

  • Tavla
  • Короткие нарды
  • Πόρτες
  • Табла

The standard game: opposing directions, hitting, a bar, and the doubling cube.

  • The two sides run towards each other; a lone checker can be hit and re-enters from the bar.
  • The cube doubles what the game is worth in points — the only one of the five games that has it.

Long Narde

  • Длинные нарды
  • Uzun Nard
  • Дълга нарда

All fifteen checkers start on one point, nothing is hit — only blocked — and both players run the same way round.

  • Only one checker may leave the head per turn, except on the first.
  • Six points in a row are forbidden unless an opposing checker is already past them.

Fevga

  • Φεύγα
  • Mültezim

No hitting: both sides run the same way, a single checker closes a point — and your first checker must pass the opponent's starting point before a second one moves.

  • No hitting and no bar; both sides run the same way round.

Plakoto

  • Πλακωτό
  • Тапа
  • محبوسة

Like backgammon, except nothing is hit: your checker sits on top of a lone enemy one and pins it until you move away — which is why there is no bar.

  • Instead of hitting, you sit on the opposing checker and trap it.

Gul Bara

  • Гюлбара
  • Gül Bara

Nothing is hit and both sides run the same way — and a double plays its number four times, then the next number four times, all the way up to six.

  • A double starts a chain: up to 24 part-moves in a single turn.
