Fifteen checkers each, on four points, mirrored between the two players: that is the backgammon starting position. To set up a backgammon board, place two checkers on point 24, five on 13, three on 8 and five on 6, counted from your own end. The board below shows it drawn, and the four steps under it say which checker goes where.
Step by step
- 24 × 2 Two checkers on point 24 — the two farthest back, deep in your opponent's home board.
- 13 × 5 Five checkers on point 13 — the midpoint, and the biggest stack on the board.
- 8 × 3 Three checkers on point 8.
- 6 × 5 Five checkers on point 6 — the six point in your own home board.
Your opponent sets up the mirror image: their point 24 is where your point 1 is. Thirty checkers in all, fifteen a colour, and the two sides run against each other — yours from 24 down to 1, theirs the other way.
