What's new on nard.gg

What's been happening at the board, newest first. Some of it wouldn't exist if somebody hadn't written to us — when that's the case, it says so.

Finally on your side of the table

Playing Black used to mean thinking around a corner. Now the board turns to face you.

  • New Everyone sees the board from their own seat: playing Black, your home board is bottom right and the point numbers count from your side — in the analysis and the puzzles too.
  • New Checkers can now be dragged with mouse or finger. Tapping still works, of course.
  • New Puzzles now come with Black to play as well — the collection grows to 1538.
  • New In Settings you can change your password and, if you like, sign out every other device.
  • Better Every player card wears the colour of its seat and tells you “You play White”. No more guessing on the phone.
  • Better When someone offers you a double, the board explains what “Take” and “Drop” mean.
  • Better Played as a guest, then logged in? Your games now move into your account with you.
  • Fixed Follow an invitation, take a seat, and you can start playing straight away.

A letter from Bulgaria

A player from Bulgaria wrote to us: that's not how we play Gul Bara here. We checked the sources — he was right. It was fixed the same evening. Thank you for feedback no. 20!

  • Fixed Gul Bara no longer has a head rule or any blocking restrictions — both had sneaked in from Fevga. With 6-6 you may now take four checkers off the head, and a wall may shut the opponent in completely. From a player's feedback
  • On the list More Narde variants from the same letter, “Нарды 6/1” and Kaftar: we're reading up on the rules. From a player's feedback
  • New nard.gg now speaks Ukrainian — language number nine, legal texts included.
  • New Under “More” at the board there's now “Report a problem”: the match travels along with the exact position, and afterwards you know the number of your report.
  • Better Rules and setup pages now lead straight to the matching game.

One button, one opponent

Filling in forms is for the tax office. From now on, one button is enough to play.

  • New “Quick game” finds you an opponent right away. If no human turns up within 15 seconds, a computer opponent takes the seat — clearly labelled as one.
  • New In the waiting room the seconds tick down where you can see them, and you decide: play the computer now, or keep waiting for a human.
  • Better Game, length, clock and rules now live under “A different match”. If you want the details, they're all there; if you just want to play, there's nothing to hunt for.
  • Better The lobby has a side column for puzzles, live games and the room code.
  • Fixed “Quick game” no longer sends you back to the same empty table over and over.

Two new languages and a board that never sleeps

The week nard.gg learned to read from right to left.

  • New nard.gg is now available in Arabic — with the board the way round it's read there.
  • New Romanian has arrived. Backgammon is called “Table” there, by the way.
  • New A real game now runs live on the start page — something to watch before you roll yourself.
  • New The starting position of every game can be walked through step by step.
  • Better “Resign game” ends the game at once at the value of the position — and what it costs is written under the button before you press it.
  • Better Your opponent now sees your move take shape, checker by checker, instead of waiting for the finished result.
  • Fixed Logged in stays logged in, “Undo” responds reliably, and the page no longer freezes.

The duel board

Board in the middle, players left and right — like a real table, minus the coffee stains.

  • New The match page has been rebuilt: the board in the middle, a player card on each side with clock, score and pip difference.
  • New Invitation games have a chat at the board. None of it is stored.
  • New Reactions at the board — from an appreciative nod to confetti. A few of them only exist between friends.
  • New Everyone gets a drawn player picture to choose from, guests included.
  • Better If your opponent loses the connection in a game between people who know each other, the clock stops and the game is kept instead of ending.
  • Fixed After joining an invitation you can move straight away.
